TEDxOhioStateU 2018:

Hide or Seek

TEDxOhioStateU is one of the few entirely student-run TEDx organizations in the United States. We bring amazing ideas from the Ohio State community and feature them on stage at our annual spring event. Each year we draw a crowd of around 1,000 students, alumni, and community members to engage with us.

The theme TEDxOhioStateUniversity's 2018 event was Hide or Seek. This play on the classic childhood game can mean a variety of things to a variety of people. We decided to take a playful approach to the design of our materials. We focused on having childhood games at the main event. The design and marketing materials centered on visual illusions and the idea of hiding and revealing. You can choose to Hide or Seek.

HIDE OR SEEK: IDENTITY

The identity for this event played off of the idea of 3D glasses. 3D glasses are a symbol for visual illusions and, for our purposes, represented seeking clarity. When a person puts on 3D glasses they gain agency to see an otherwise hidden world.

THEME REVEAL VIDEO

The theme reveal video was meant to capture the playfulness of the theme. In the video, the "O" and "R" engage in a game of "catch me if you can" to highlight the idea of childhood games. Following the word "or" highlights the twist on the classic "Hide and Seek".

SPEAKER REVEAL PHOTOS

For the speaker reveal photos, I wanted to do something TEDxOhioStateU had never done before. We wanted to create portraits that were not the standard headshot while also using the branding. We also wanted to create some content for social media while we had the speakers at our disposal. I art directed and photographed the speakers playing with Hide or Seek branded materials in order to tie in the fun, childlike elements of the theme.

PROGRAM DESIGN

I designed the program with a two-fold purpose: to give guests a timeline of the event and provide them with a keepsake. To achieve this, I designed the program to contain an event poster on the inside. This was made possible by using a broadside booklet fold.

STAGE DESIGN

For the stage design, we wanted to visualize the concept of hiding and seeking by using panels that layer in space. Some panels have an acrylic covering that hides what is behind it while others are open and reveal other parts of the set. The panels were washed in red light for out "Hide" session and blue light for the "Seek" session.
